Laying the Groundwork

Students will learn to write, rehearse and record original material as well as session work. As a group they will be introduced to studying lyrics, composition, harmony and theory through various fun and educational exercises. They will be taught to write as an individual as well as in duos. The instructor will be co-writing with the students and offering suggestions on how to push the song toward its desired manifestation.

During this first month of study, students will be developing rough demos of the songs they compose. From these demos, we will start employing the students to be session musicians. The instructor will help them develop the parts that work for that particular tune. We then start rehearsing the songs, trim the fat and get to where they can perform them to the best of their abilities. They are recorded live as a group to keep the energy and feeling, then the overdubs are added individually.

The importance of solid bass playing cannot be underestimated. It is the glue that holds a song together. With dedication and practice, the student can feel confident playing their favorite songs with others in a group, or even creating their own songs.

Next comes brainstorming what appropriate imagery could be used for a video, then shooting and editing the video. Each student will be provided a copy of their video for future self-promotion.

The class meets Thursday evenings from 5 PM to 7 PM and runs for three months.
